Dogs are minor angels ~ Johathan Carroll quote
“
Dogs
are minor angels, and I don’t mean that facetiously. They love
unconditionally, forgive immediately, are the truest of friends, willing
to do anything that makes us happy, etcetera. If we attributed some of
those qualities to a person we would say they are special. If they had
ALL of them, we would call them angelic. But because it’s “only” a dog,
we dismiss them as sweet or funny but little more. However when you
think about it, what are the things that we most like in another human
being? Many times those qualities are seen in our dogs every single day—
we’re just so used to them that we pay no attention.

Dog of the Week - Greyfriars Bobby
Greyfriars Bobby is famous for his loyalty. Bobby, a Skye terrier was owned by a night watchman for Edinburgh City Police, John Gray, who died when Bobby was about two years old. Bobby spent the rest of his life at his masters grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Greyfriars Bobby's loyalty is commemorated with a statue by Willian Brodie "A TRIBUTE TO THE AFFECTIONATE FIDELITY OF GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY. IN 1858,
THIS FAITHFUL DOG FOLLOWED THE REMAINS OF HIS MASTER TO GREYFRIAR'S
CHURCHYARD AND LINGERED NEAR THE SPOT UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1872 WITH
PERMISSION, ERECTED BY THE BARONESS BURDETT- COUTTS" and on the statue
is written "GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY, FROM THE LIFE JUST BEFORE HIS DEATH" and
"W.H. Brodie Sc RSA 1872"
His grave, where people leave sticks and dog toys, is marked with a stone erected by The Dog Aid Society of Scotland in 1981 which reads:
"Greyfriars Bobby Died 14 January 1872 Aged 16 years Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all."

How livestock guardian dogs are used and why -
Ranchers in the USA who struggle to coexist with large predators are finding new
hope in old dog breeds. While these Old World livestock guardian dog
breeds have successfully defended livestock from predators for thousands
of years in Europe and Asia, they remain relatively unknown in the
American West. Explore how they work for one family, and what it means
for the maintenance of large predators, like the wolf, on the landscape.

Gelert ~ Dog of The Week
In the 13th Century Wales, Llwelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd, owned a faithful hound named Gelert. Some say the dog was a gift to Llwelyn from King John of England.
One day Prince Llweyln returned from a hunting trip to find his baby missing and blood on Gelert's muzzle. In a fit of anguish, believing that Gelert had harmed his child, Llweyln drew his sword and killed Gelert. But at that moment he heard a babies cry and found his son under the overturned cradle and the dead body of a wolf.
Gelert had not killed his child but saved him from a wolf attack and Llwelyn had killed his faithful hound.
Prince Llweyln buried Gelert with great sadness, legend has it that he is buried in a village named Beddgelert. Beddgelert is Welsh for Gelert's Grave. A memorial to Gelert can be found there which reads:

IN THE 13TH CENTURY, LLYWELYN, PRINCE OF NORTH WALES, HAD A PALACE AT BEDDGELERT. ONE DAY HE WENT HUNTING WITHOUT GELERT "THE FAITHFUL HOUND" WHO WAS UNACCOUNTABLY ABSENT. ON LLYWELYN'S RETURN, THE TRUANT STAINED AND SMEARED WITH BLOOD, JOYFULLY SPRANG TO MEET HIS MASTER. THE PRINCE ALARMED HASTENED TO FIND HIS SON, AND SAW THE INFANT'S COT EMPTY, THE BEDCLOTHES AND FLOOR COVERED WITH BLOOD. THE FRANTIC FATHER PLUNGED THE SWORD INTO THE HOUND'S SIDE THINKING IT HAD KILLED HIS HEIR. THE DOG'S DYING YELL WAS ANSWERED BY A CHILD'S CRY. LLYWELYN SEARCHED AND DISCOVERED HIS BOY UNHARMED BUT NEAR BY LAY THE BODY OF A MIGHTY WOLF WHICH GELERT HAD SLAIN, THE PRINCE FILLED WITH REMORSE IS SAID NEVER TO HAVE SMILED AGAIN. HE BURIED GELERT HERE. THE SPOT IS CALLED BEDDGELERT.

Dog quotations - Louis Sabin - a dog makes you rich
"No matter how little money and how few possessions you own having a dog makes you rich"
"A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He doesn't care if you're not smart, not popular, not a good joke-teller, not the best athlete, nor the best-looking person. To your dog, you are the greatest, the smartest, the nicest human being who was ever born. You are his friend and protector."

Canine Blood Bank Service - Pet Blood Bank UK urgently needs donors
Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the first and only charity of its kind that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK.
Just like the human blood service, Pet Blood Bank UK collects from willing doggy donors at organised collection sessions nationwide, on average three sessions a week. The blood is then processed into packed red blood cells and fresh plasma, and delivered to veterinary practices when they need it most.
Every unit of blood collected can help save up to four dogs' lives, saving thousands of lives every year.

Even if your dog isn't suitable there are still lots of ways you can help Pet Blood Bank UK to save canine lives, find out more at Pet Blood Bank UK Volunteering

An Oklahoma miracle - video of womans dog emerging from rubble
Miraculous stories of survival emerge after one of the strongest tornadoes in history tore through an Oklahoma suburb. An elderly woman whose home was destroyed by the Oklahoma tornado found her pet dog among the rubble during a live TV interview.
The footage of Barbara Garcia came as fellow survivors began reliving the terror they felt while winds of up to 200mph obliterated their neighbourhoods.
Mrs Garcia was standing among the twisted wreckage of her home as she was interviewed about her experiences by a reporter from CBS.
"I was sitting on the stool holding my dog," she said.
"This was the game plan all through the years, to go in that little bathroom (together). I rolled around a little bit and when it stopped I was right there (and) that stove cooker is what I saw.
"I never lost consciousness and I hollered for my little dog and he didn't answer, he didn't come, so I know he's in here somewhere." But as she spoke, a member of the camera crew spotted a dog's head poking out of the twisted remains of her home.
Mrs Garcia is seen crouching down before exclaiming with joy as she spots her pet.
"Well I thought God just answered one prayer to let me be OK but he answered both of them," she said, before being led away from the ruins with her dog.
Meanwhile, one mother who survived the storm described how she and her children took refuge in their bath as the tornado tore their house apart.
"My husband told us to get in the bathtub immediately and put on a mattress," she said.
She said she had to hold her daughter's hair to stop her slipping away when the tornado struck.
Another family locked themselves inside their cellar - only to have its door ripped open by the twister.
Ricky Stover said: "We thought we'd die. We saw the latch coming undone and we couldn't reach for it ... glass and debris started slamming on us."

Robert Bradford Dog Sculptures from Discarded Plastic Toys
Dog sculptures by Robert Bradford made from layers of thousands of discarded children's toys:
" One day about four years ago out in the studio I was looking into my childrens box of outgrown / discarded toys which happened to be stored in the same building and responded to the random collection of colours shapes and forms they made. I figured that if I could find a way of putting them together to constitute a larger form they would have great potential as larger scale sculpture."

Dogs age in human years
You've probably heard the classic dog to human age conversion of 1 dog year = 7 human years but in reality that is a bit of an urban legend that apparently started in the 1960s in a maths text book! Research by the University of Georgia, as published by BBC News (and others) shows a different picture:
For first two years:
Small: Dachshund (Miniature) 4.32, Border Terrier 4.47, Lhasa Apso 4.49, Shih Tzu 4.78, Whippet Medium 5.30, Chihuahua 4.87, West Highland White Terrier 4.96, Beagle 5.20, Miniature Schnauzer 5.46, Spaniel (Cocker) 5.55, Cavalier King Charles 5.77, Pug 5.95, French Bulldog 7.65
Medium: Spaniel 5.46, Retriever (Labrador) 5.74, Golden Retriever 5.74, Staffordshire Bull Terrier 5.33, Bulldog 13.42
Large: German Shepherd 7.84, Boxer 8.90
Which means that a small dog is older than a big dog at two human years - but younger at five.

For first two years:
- 12.5 years per human year for the first two years for small dogs
- 10.5 years per human year for the first two years for medium sized dogs
- 9 years per human year for the first two years for large dogs

Questionnaire to help investigation into New Forest dog deaths
Following a number of dog deaths in the New Forest, Hampshire the Animal Health Trust is asking for dog walkers to fill out a questionnaire to help with investigations as to the cause.
"A recent spate of dog deaths in the New Forest in Hampshire has prompted our scientists to assist in an on-going investigation into this mystery dog illness.
Dog owners are advised to look out for wounds or lesions on the limbs or face of their dog which will not heal. Affected dogs then go on to develop signs of severe depression, loss of appetite, and vomiting, quickly accompanied by acute injury to the kidneys, which is understood to have proven fatal in all but two cases to date.
If you have walked your dog in the New Forest Fordingbridge area since the beginning of 2013, please complete this questionnaire, even if your dog has not been affected.
The actual cause of acute kidney failure, and its link to the initial wounds, is a mystery. This forms the focus of the current investigation which is being led by Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Winchester in collaboration with Forest Veterinary Clinic in Fordingbridge - the area which has been most affected. Lynwood Vets is also closely involved with the investigation, as it has seen a number of cases.
David Walker, Head of Internal Medicine at Anderson Moores, said: “We are working with a number of veterinary and medical colleagues in the UK and the US to try and identify the cause of this concerning cluster of cases as quickly as we can. Pet owners should seek veterinary attention if they identify a wound on their dog’s legs or face. “
Dr Richard Newton, our Head of Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology, said: “Input from dog walkers is essential to progress the investigation, even if their dog wasn’t affected. The questionnaire will provide vital information to help in identifying areas of highest risk, and possibly factors that contribute to the condition in this area of the New Forest.”
It is important for dog owners walking their pets in the New Forest to be vigilant. If your dog develops the clinical signs as mentioned above, seek advice from your local vet immediately.
If you are a dog owner and have any concerns or questions, please direct your enquiries to Forest Veterinary Clinic on 01425 652221 or by emailing: forestvetsAKI@aol.co.uk If you are a vet, please direct your enquiries to Anderson Moores on 01962 76792 or by emailing info@andersonmoores.com.
A hard copy of the New Forest questionnaire can be provided by emailing info@aht.org.uk."

Lone Dog by Irene Rutherford McLeod
I'm a lean dog, a keen dog, a wild dog, and lone;
I'm a rough dog, a tough dog, hunting on my own;
I'm a bad dog, a mad dog, teasing silly sheep;
I love to sit and bay the moon, to keep fat souls from sleep.
I'll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet,
A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat,
Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate,
But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff and kick, and hate.
Not for me the other dogs, running by my side,
Some have run a short while, but none of them would bide.
O mine is still the lone trail, the hard trail, the best,
Wide wind, and wild stars, and hunger of the quest!

Dog Tutus Anyone?
Tutus for dogs
these ones are hand tied on a soft and stretchy waffle crochet waistband, with triple layers for maximum fluff.

Dognapping - watch out for the letter K
K
National newspapers recently reported that dognappings have gone up by 17% in the UK with an estimated 3,500 dog thefts reported last year. This figure could actually be much higher as many thefts go unrecorded due to the police being reluctant to issue a crime number unless an owner has evidence of a crime and can prove the dog has been stolen.
Dogs are being stolen "to order" by organised gangs who will watch and wait, sometimes for weeks, for an opportunity to steal. One paper reported that the letter K has been found chalked near properties where dogs have been taken.
What Makes Chocolate Poisonous to Dogs?
You do know that chocolate is incredibly poisonous to dogs don't you?
Dogs and chocolate do not mix. Although dogs, like humans, love the taste of chocolate for them consuming it can result in vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, seizures, respiratory failure, internal bleeding, cardiac arrest and death.
This is because chocolate contains an alkaloid called theobromine, a stimulant found in the cocoa bean which affects the central nervous system and heart and unfortunately for dogs they can't metabolize it as fast as humans can resulting in theobromine poisoning.
